This is Super Smash Flash unblocked: McLeodGaming's original 2006 platform fighter runs above on Ruffle, served from supersmashflash.org itself, so it plays in an ordinary browser tab on a school Chromebook or laptop. Free, no download, no account, and two people can play on one keyboard.

Super Smash Flash: Melee in a browser window, 2006 style

Super Smash Flash is the fan game McLeodGaming's Cleod9 made in Macromedia Flash 8 in 2006. Its title screen says it plainly: it is based on Super Smash Bros. Melee for the Nintendo GameCube, and the characters belong to Nintendo, HAL, Sega, Capcom and the rest. It was a hit on Newgrounds and Armor Games, and this is the Newgrounds version of the file.

The rules are Smash rules. Nobody has a health bar. Every hit raises a damage percentage, and the higher it climbs the further the next hit sends you flying. You lose a life (a stock) when you fly off the edge of the screen, and the last fighter with stocks left wins. Items drop in during a match: we saw a Bob-omb, a beam sword, a heart container and a mushroom in one short game on Dream Land.

The select screen starts with 13 fighters: Mario, Link, Zelda, Samus, Kirby, Pikachu, Fox, Captain Falcon, Mega Man, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Blade, a fan character. Fifteen more squares are question marks. The unlock messages in the file name them: Luigi, Young Link, Jigglypuff, Mewtwo, Mr. Game & Watch, Shadow, Super Sonic, Zero, Cloud, Crono, Lloyd, Naruto, Inuyasha, Mr. Incredible and Blue. Final Destination and Battlefield unlock as well.

How to win more Super Smash Flash matches

  1. Watch the percentage, not a health bar: Low damage means you are hard to launch. Stay out of the way at high percentages and go for knockouts when the other fighter is above 100%.
  2. Mix normal and smash attacks: The game's own tip: rack up damage by mixing your Special with normal and smash attacks, then finish with a smash (P plus a direction).
  3. Knock airborne fighters down: A downward hit on someone in the air is a meteor smash. Over a pit it can end a stock at low damage.
  4. Mind the edges: Walking off the side costs a stock just like getting launched. On Dream Land, the ground ends sooner than you expect.
  5. Use the platforms: Hold Down to fall through thin platforms to escape or to chase.
  6. Start with a level 1 CPU: The CPU card has a level slider. Learn one fighter against level 1, then raise it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Super Smash Flash unblocked at school?

Yes. Super Smash Flash runs in a normal browser tab from supersmashflash.org with nothing to install, so it plays on most school Chromebooks. If a network filter blocks the site, only that network's administrator can change it.

What is Super Smash Flash?

A free fan-made platform fighter by McLeodGaming, released in 2006 and based on Super Smash Bros. Melee. Characters from Nintendo, Sega, Capcom and anime fight on classic stages, and you win by knocking the others off the screen.

How do you play Super Smash Flash?

Player 1 moves with the arrow keys, jumps with O and attacks with P. Player 2 uses W A S D, G and F. Attack alone for a normal hit, attack while holding Left or Right for a smash attack, and press Down + attack on the ground for your special. Backspace pauses.

Can two people play on one computer?

Yes. VS. Mode takes up to four fighters, and two of them can be people on one keyboard. Click the HMN tag on a player card to turn that seat into a CPU with its own level slider.

Is this Super Smash Flash 2?

No. This is the first Super Smash Flash from 2006. Super Smash Flash 2 is a later, separate McLeodGaming game with its own roster and engine.

How can a Flash game still run?

Through Ruffle, an open-source Flash Player emulator written in Rust and WebAssembly. The page loads Ruffle and the original game file together, and nothing is installed.
