American Football Challenge is a catching game, not a full football sim. The quarterback throws, and your only job is to get the receiver's gloves under the ball. There are no playbooks, no tackling and no defence to read. Each throw is a small aiming problem, and the satisfaction comes from stringing clean catches together.

That makes it a different kind of session from the rest of Super Smash Flash. The site is built around fighters you play on one keyboard, such as Gun Mayhem 2 and House of Hazards. How to play

The controls are not the arrow-key scheme you may be used to on this site. The game's own help screen says to move the mouse to control the receiver's gloves and catch the ball. On a phone or tablet you drag a finger instead. Keyboard keys do nothing for the catch itself.

The opening screen asks you to tap to start the quarterback throw. After that the ball leaves the quarterback's hand and you slide the gloves to where it will come down. A catch scores and shows a short cheer such as GOOD, GREAT or EXCELLENT. A miss is flagged MISS and counts against the match. Levels are picked from a level-select screen, and the game keeps a running total score.

Progress is stored in your browser's local storage. If you clear site data, or play in a private window, your saved levels can disappear. The game itself warns about this on Safari private browsing.

Tips

• Watch the ball's shadow on the field. It shows where the ball will land earlier than the ball itself does.
• Move the gloves early and then make small corrections. Chasing the ball at the last moment is how most misses happen.
• Use a mouse or a touchscreen if you have one. A trackpad works, but small movements are harder to control.
• If a level feels unfair, replay it from the level menu. Each attempt gives you another look at how the throw behaves.
