Big Shot Boxing is a pixel-art boxing game built around a career rather than a single bout. You start a new boxer, sign with a manager, take fights, and try to work your way up the rankings toward a title shot. The developer is Colin Lane, and the whole thing runs in the browser with nothing to install.
What sets it apart is the long view. Purses from your fights go into the gym, and your boxer slowly ages as the career goes on, so the choices you make between fights matter as much as the punches you throw in the ring. Each individual fight is short, which makes it easy to fit in a few bouts at a time.
On a site built around Super Smash Flash, it is the sports-flavoured cousin to the brawlers: still a one-on-one fight on a keyboard, but slower and more about timing and stamina than about launching your opponent off a stage.
How to play
From the menu choose Career, then New Career, and pick a boxer. Once you are in the ring the controls are four keys:
- Right arrow throws the jab.
- Left arrow throws the cross.
- X throws the uppercut.
- Z blocks.
A fight is a back-and-forth exchange: you land punches, guard against your opponent's, and try to win the bout. Between fights you manage the career side, spending what you earned on gym training and lining up the next opponent.
Tips
- Learn the four keys before worrying about strategy. The jab and cross are your everyday punches, and the uppercut is the one to save for a clear opening.
- Do not just hold block. Guarding is for the moments your opponent is throwing, then look for your own gap.
- Treat the gym as an investment. Because your boxer ages, money spent on training early on pays back over more fights.
Similar games on Super Smash Flash
If you want a different kind of one-on-one fight, Punchers is another punching game, while Rowdy Wrestling swaps boxing for the wrestling ring. For the classic Flash-brawler feel, Gun Mayhem 2 and Stick Fighter are quicker and more chaotic, and Super Smash Flash itself is the platform-fighter the site is named for.
Big Shot Boxing suits players who like a game with a bit of progression and can settle into a longer career across several sessions, and it plays best with a keyboard.
